PREFACE

The Rose of Hope (America)(poem)
Tween the sea of Faith, and the Ocean of Peace
lies the land of the Rose of Hope tied to a fusion of dreams
Bloom Rose of Hope midst cursed heat of bitter hate,
bloom in darkest cold of indifference haste/
Bloom bending with every wind of left and right
Bloom let fragrance remain
For a faded rose is no more
and but a space tucked in historys page
Recalled, whistfully recalled
And  freedom, is but a fragile fragrance,
from the Rose of Hope.

This poem was written and published in the Chicago Catholic archdiocesan newspaper The New World in 1965. Which I first wrote it after participating in the mayoral campaign of John L.Waner (HUD Secretary under Nixon) vs Richard J Daley the turnmoil caused by the Nixon resignation was in mind Little did I know that it has more of an application today.

Before you decide to run begin by assessing your local ward and county organizations
If they do do this you have a good start

A WEEK BEFORE ELECTION OR BEFORE EARLY VOTING STARTS
While there should be attention given to when early voting begins. Yhe Two weeks or so before the election Republican party poll workers, judges and alternates, shou;d have already attended a luncheon held by the regular organization and are introduced to the candidates if available.
If there are special instructions about the conduct of the election, that would be a heads up on candidate poll watcher credentials or an introduction ot the party precinct worker and fraud alerts etc . It's given then. Also election judges are given a tally form and are to record each candidates vote total from their precincts and return that to party headquarters after the polls close or send that in.

Party poll workers are also usually required to attend at least two meetings a year held by by the regular organization

The week before the election a general meeting is held and at that time candidate material is readily available , signs, flyers literature etc and lists of registered voters of that precinct (called a hard card) is handed out to the assigned precinct worker . In some cases a map of the precinct is also given. The hard card is used to focus on registered voters and to keep track of contact by placing a check mark by the name.
A voter with a positive response gets a plus sign by the name, a voter with a negative respose gets a minus sign by the name.
If the poll worker is available for the day he or she frequently checks in to see if their plusses voted and if not tries to get that person with the plus sign to the polls. On the day of the election the precinct worker heads over to the assigned precinct polling place, makes sure it is open, and assists the judges and alternates in the setting up of the polling place. Usually they also bring a coffee or tea packet as well as sweet roll.

If they don't measure up there are ways to work around them meaning you must develop your own following.
But DON'T GIVE THEM A CENT

Government interloping in everyday life particularly by pseudo libs calling themselves "democrat" but really are socialists has gotten to such a point that this 77 year old war horse and a veteran of many political campaigns in what is called today a "blue" state and city and having that experience as a highly respected designer of of print campaigns which have been sucessfull. I decided rather than throw hands up in dispair share the aquired knowledge and experiences.

The first advice is to those running unopposed in a primary simply to show opposition . Don't think just because you've decided to run you can sit on your ass and the partys gonna thank you and get out your vote .Do not feel if your unopposed in a primary all you have to do is sit on your keister and wait for a month before election to campaign....If you feel that way YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS RUNNING FOR OFFICE .Especially in a heavily blue district

"Politics is a business" a successful many term Illinois Republican state representative once told me. He made every wake and function in his district, had file cards on birthdays and would send out birthday and messages of congratulations to family members of important supporters and contributers. It was as if he made his constituents members of his immediate family.

The Point being, first forget about your ego if you enter into this business because it will be dashed if it becomes clear you don't know what the hell your doing in it. Secondly forget about a private life if your good at what you do. Your on 24/7 call. This is one reason why so many politicians in both partys run into marriage difficulties. And the greater the office, the more the demand there is on your private life.

HOW TO RUN A $1,000,000 CAMPAIGN
ON A $1,000 BUDGET

The whole concept of this is basic campaigning.

You can't rely on free publicity by the main stream media. You won't have the big money for TV or radio commercials like your incumbent opponent has. Your going to have make do with what you have and that is relying on print material and word of mouth.

Initially your biggest expences are in cases of paper. You may even consider getting a small offset press, or leasing open time on one, or hooking up with a company which has one for in kind campaign contributions.

Then organizing "blitz teams" folks who support you which circulate your material house to house in key precincts to put up signs and circulate your material effectivly in wards and precincts in your district.

There's a line in the movie "Patton" delivered by George C Scott where he standing before assembled troops delivers the line "America hates a looser and we're not loosers" to a certain extent thats true anywhere. What he didn't add was this, and its peculuar to Americans. What Americans love and respect is a fighter. And that, during your campaign is what you have to project, throughout your campaign.

CHAPTER 1 GETTING STARTED

YOU HAVE NO CHOICE
THE MEDIA IS SO DOMINATED WITH SOCIALISTS WHO WILL RESORT TO MISINFORMATION FOR YOU TO GET YOUR MESSAGE OUT YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO RESORT TO LEAFLET DISTRIBUTION BEGINING AND ENDING YOUR CAMPAIGN
Make noise and the money will come for those radio and tv commercials

The RNCEC offers little advice to those first time not targeted district candidates on how to present themselves or even organize a campaign .

So You Want To Run For Office In 2010

YOU START RUNNING NOW

WHILE THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WARRANTS CRITICISM OBAMA IS NOT YOUR TARGET.
.YOUR TARGET IS YOUR OPPONENT..
WHO YOU CONNECT TO THAT ADMINISTRATION
Remind voters of the constitution and the division of powers contained in it
Congress Controls The Money And Watches Where It Goes..
.Not Hand It Off Unsupervised To The Executive Branch and its bureaucracy
Tick off every dumb proposed piece of legislation your opponent has ever come up with

ELECTIONS ARE NOT WON BY ATTENDING ENDLESS MEETINGS & TEAS*
* Unless There is conservative media and they can reach or help reach your constituency. Your better off if they are conducted in one of your precincts
THEY ARE WON BY CARRYING PRECINCT AFTER PRECINCT

Unless you live in the state of Louisiana where their one of their units of local government is broken down in French terms, countys are called parishes. Our most immediate unit including Louisiana is called a precinct, a number of precincts comprize a ward, and a number of wards comprize a township, town, city and district. This you better know already otherwise we're in deep do do. But what you may not be aware of is how to use these important tools when running a successful campaign.
A record of registered voters is maintained by an assigned unit of government. From that source get the tallys of the vote from each precinct from the last election along with the list of registered voters for the recomended precincts as explained below. !

FOR PRIMARY ELECTIONS

YOUR LIST OF REGISTERED VOTERS ARE YOUR WORK SHEETS

In rural areas it is usually the County Clerk, in metro areas it usually is a board of election commissioners of that juristiction be it city,or county or both. If your planning to run for office it is highly recomended you secure a copy of that list of registered voters from that unit.
If its a primary in a state where party affliation is declared they might maintain lists of voters registered to that party. In any case if there is a fee for this pay it.
If your running for a legislative post a map is available of that district from; If a county/city office your county/city juristiction (usually the clerk) or if a state office secure this from (usually) your secretary of state.

Your States Filing 2010 Date
State and Local governments & most agencies
KEY HOUSE RACES
BEFORE YOU EVEN DECLARE YOUR CANDIDACY GET A MAP OF YOUR DISTRICT AND TOUR IT

Understand what is in your district, its precincts, wards, towns, villages, farms, and townships. Its churches, businesses, and types of housing. While doing so take pixs of yourself in those different areas talking to area residents and save them for your brochure which you use both in rhe primary and the general elections.
This is particularly usefull in state elections when running against an "established" incumbent.
.Use those maps to chart your progress as you or your volunteers contact voters with the good news you are out to save the world.

There is a strategy behind using precinct lists of registered voters. It saves you time, and directs your efforts.

REMEMBER THIS THE FASTEST WAY TO LOSE
IS TO LOSE YOUR VOLUNTEERS
IT BEGINS BY NOT THANKING THEM

If your running for a local legislative office (alderman) or (state rep) you should get the complete set of registered voters for your district. You or your volunteer then go out to those addresses, get your petitions signed, and make your presence known that your out there fighting for democracy and the American way.

Obviously if your running for a state wide office, state senator, congress or senate you don't need every precinct lists of registered voters because that would fill your headquarters with what your fighting; paperwork.

But you do want a precinct by precinct tally of votes (candidate count) vs the number of registered voters (turnout) to determine those weak precincts, also if your opponent ran in a contested race during a primary select those precincts where your opponent either failed to carry that precinct, or your opponent's turnout was below their average percentage of victory. It is those precincts voters lists you want.

If your running on a party ticket a good ward, township, or county organization should also have copies of registered voters available. But probably don't. Depending upon the organization.

Meaning does it have precinct workers ? If not but has a conservative count you see if you can get a worker in there . And if they had poll watchers in those precincts and voters were checked off as they came and voted with a red or blue colored pencil indicating the voters party preference during a primary.
If its a state where its an open primary and a check off record was kept if they voted in a general election and a check mark is by the name those records are also valuable

A WORD ABOUT PRECINCT ELECTION JUDGES.
MEET THEM PARTICULARLY IF YOUR RUNNING AGAINST A RINO OR AS A 3RD PARTY CONSERVATIVE PLANNING TO VOTE WITH THE REPUBLICAN CAUCUS IF YOU WIN

In most states judges of election at the precinct level represent a political party and depending upon state law and the number of political partys registered in the state but it is usually one judge per party and an alternate.
Most often a precinct polling place has 2 of each, Democrat, and Republican.

They are the unhearlded...those little old ladies who ask you for your credentials before you vote...THEY ARE THE KEYSTONE OF THE PARTY AND THEY VOTE

A smart candidate will hold a coffee or a tea prior to the election for these folks of your party if the following does not happen. Usually its held by the party committeeman, if they're any good, which you attend contribute to and introduce yourself.

Otherwise you get the list of judges in that weak district and hold one yourself. While judges by law cannot electioneer, they can be asked to be a checker and check off the names of the voter as they vote. If you are able to have a volunteer working that precinct your vol periodically goes in to see if those people that were contacted came to the polls.
It is also customary during election day to go around to precincts polling places (without electioneering) and drop off cookies, donuts, or snacks.

YOUR PETITION DRIVE
FILING.
Do not rely on verbal instructions when formating your petitions for candidacy. Don't get "cute" and make up your own format because it will cost you. Work from written instructions or the approved sample. Follow this exactly and instruct the circulators of your petitions to likewise follow the legal requirements.
Petitions must be notarized. Check on what residency requirements of the circulator are,and follow the law. In most states in a primary the signator need not be a member of the political party your running with in order to sign but always check first.

Challenges to petitions can be costly. To avoid them use those registered voter sheets to check names and signatures if incorrect black them out before turning that sheet in. Check those signatures to see that they exactly match the names on the registered voters list.If they don't, take a marking pen and mark them out. This also shows the authorities youy have screened your petitions which lessons the likely hood of your petitions being challanged. .
Also when circulating your petitions provide your circulators with a brief bio of yourself which they handout to the signator and make a copy of the petition for future use before you bundle them up and turn them in. If funds are available send them a post card thanking them for signing .There are suggested designs and formats following in Chapter 3 which you can adapt and print up to use as your handout.. Always try and get 20% more than the required ammount of signatures needed.

FUNDING
FOLLOW THE THE REQUIREMENTS TO THE LETTER

Differing states have different rules but as you know that is strictly regulated. To check on those rules, check with your secretary of state usually and local election boards to find out what they are. A word about those percenters. These are professional fund raisers which operate on a percent of what is donated, and depending upon the race and the candidate the cut can go as high as 50%.
If you choose to hire one Make sure you reach an understanding with them that their phone solicitors ask for volunteers if they get a positive or negative response for a contribution and; that they turn in those names etc into you as part of any deal you make with them

PHONE BANKS
What is your name recognition standing ?
To see how your doing using a "chat sheet". Periodically take a name recognition phone survey using the Independent Polling Service device,
Random call 10 people (picked out from your registered voters list) in each ward of your district. The chat sheet should read ; Hi, I'm with the independent Polling service and I'm calling to find out if you recognize any of these 6 names which are running for (your office). Read off four names plus yours and your opponents and see what response you get. Do not politicize this with a candidate pitch. Your doing this to find out where you stand in name recognition
Get every relevant phone book within your district you can lay your hands on.Most areas allow unlimited phone calls within a given prefix. If yours is a large district having many prefixes try and get supporters to call within the area of your district having that prefix.

Soft sell Voter interest surveys can work using phone banks but do not use them unless your name recognition is at 50%. A cold call about a candidate announcing a position with no response sought from the receiver having no name recognition works against the candidate. It does work if its an announcement- ie; "Joan Dokes who's running for bla bla invites you to hear her at a Candidates forum,on TV etc...

CHAPTER 1 RECAP

Understand what you and your family are getting into, understand the legislative process if its an exceutive position understand what its limitations are. Know the rules, on filing, reporting campaign funds. Above all know your district and its people.
Section 2 deals with organizing your campaign. The use of recent polling data, getting that data, precinct polling lists, and precinct maps. Constructing and marking a district precinct map "targeting precincts

What wasn't covered was this; Befere we get into websites and literature design a very important aspect of any campaign is printed material distribution; Do not rely solely on one medium to get your message out. While your best method is personal contact, the second best is the use of printed campaign material passed house to house. If you do not expect to use print material distribution as part of your campaign Dont Run

SETTING UP "BLITZ" TEAMS

A "blitz" team is usually made up of two vehicles, a van carrying young legs distributing campaign material house to house and another vehicle posting pole and other signs sent to one of those picked from the master map (and scouted out the day previous) targeted precincts or districts.
Vehicles are unmarked (no candidate signs displayed so as not to alert the opposition ) sometimes going out late at night or early morning.
During a primary expect work work alone particularly if your race is contended which is why you target precincts. Unless you have an understanding with the following.
During the general election if your district (state senator or congressional) encompasses es several other legislative (state rep/state senator) suggest with each to put out a joint piece (you oneside they the other) and share the cost of printing and distribution.... If during a primary your primary opponent does this you use two pieces one positive about yourself one negative about your opponent.
Another way you can reduce costs is to approach local merchants, (pizza parlors, restaurants, bars, etc) and distribute their handbills along with your material. A selling point to this is, you will instruct your volunteers to place the merchants handbills in one place and yours in another..

REMEMBER THIS
ELECTIONS ARE WON IN THE PRECINCTS
NOT IN THE ETHERNET

Your Website... if you don't have one already..
. If you can work with your host county, the county you live and vote in, you can post your page, and your "blog" into their website index file as an htm or html (a link to a given subject)

The official address of the page your reading this from is http://www.theusmat.com/home.htm if you punch that address up you will get this page without going through my index page.
It is not a separate site but a page in The US Mat.Com site. You can do the same thing listing your county GOP org address first followed by a /yourname.htm and posting your page in the hosts index file

.Linking your "blog" (your blub pages)to your handout page which covers your appearances , and your press releases etc keeps your print handout easier to maintain because new postings change the printer settings.
Doing it this will save tons of money. Likewise you can have a layout (as I suggested) different than the county try not to step on any toes within the local party.

If not you have to go the whole 9 yards. Be required to pay for a domain name which is your web address, and take a note from others keep your address simple.

If you have no experience in setting up a website there are free editing programs which are compatable with Windows and Macs, 1st Page 2000 by Eversoft, an Austrialian outfit is one of the few, its free, and better than Front Page.
If your running for Congress,or a state wide office you should really have your own website .

MAKE YOUR FIRST PAGE YOUR BROCHURE
But first a word about logos. Do not clutter your logo. A cluttered logo shows a cluttered mind. Make it simple bearing in mind that a 1 inch high block letter can be read from 10 feet by a person with 20/20 vision. If it has thin lettering its less. Don't load it down with more than two colors. Why ? Because more colors may print out using a computers printer well enough. But when it goes to a print shop thats a different matter and more colors adds to the cost of printing. On a small press which prints but one color at a time. It means another pass for every additional color unless it has a two or more color printing capacity. Your logo should include not only include your name, but the office your running for unless you have solid name reconition, even then include the office your running for and the date of elections especially if its a primary.

Just because you have a website ; Does the guy next door, across the street, down the block, or two blocks down, even know your running ? There is a tendency to load up sites with fancy smancy links forever downloads and lengthy verbage pleasing to the "geek elite" but to print out would take 10 pages of dangling sentences . Your not selling gagets.... your selling yourself and what you stand for....Your objective is to reach as many as you can.

DON'T GET TOO TRENDY
YOUR AIM IS TO GET ELECTED NOT BRAG ABOUT YOUR FANCY SITE WHEN YOU MEET YOUR COMPATRIOTS RUNNING FOR A SIMILAR OFFICE

This is not railing against using the newest tech applications when making your presentations. Use every method you can to present your case.

But ! Bear in mind your aim is to reach as many voters out there as you can.

If you have a district where 50% of voting age (not kids) activly use a computer 2+ hours per day. Budget 50% of your campaign budget into tech applications. While there are pleanty of computer savey voters out there.

There are more that ain't, and they don't have the time or the equipment especially if they're on line. They're too busy trying to pay the bills .

Its nice to have the 20 somethings, who go to the UTube ,talk about you but who goes to the polls more often ? Its a fact they don't.

If your present site is loaded down this way you can always set up this brochure page as your page 1 & 2 and using the old proof reader marks "stet" leave it untouched so it can accomodate being printed and scrolled to your activity links, videos, face, twitter, etc then link it on to your other stuff

GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE ... YOUR BROCHURE PAGE SHOULD BE PRINTER FRIENDLY ! ABLE TO BE PRINTED ON ONE PIECE OF PAPER 8+x11 ON BOTH SIDES SO YOU CAN USE THIS AS YOUR HANDOUT AND SUPPORTERS CAN PRINT THESE UP AND HAND THEM OUT TO THEIR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS.

EXAMPLE
Use half of a 8+X11 sized printed page, (make this your introduction page) with the pitch to print and the lower half with your pitch for support or visa versa.

WELCOME TO MY WEB PAGES
I need Your Support To Get The Word Out
If You Cannot Volunteer Or Contribute A Way to help
Please Print My Handbill Up
And Pass it Out To Your Friends and Neighbors
Thank You

To print my campaign piece front and back properly;

Go to File on your tool bar and click on Print View and view this page by page. Set your printer page setting depending on.

At this point in your instructions decide which sheet width you will be using for an 8+ X 11 sheet and give your instructions accordingly. If your layout is portrait 8+" width or landscape 11" width and tell them to set their printer accordingly.

It should show my flyer can be printed on 3 pages pages 1 to 3. If it shows 4 pages reduce the type size. Go to View on your Tool Bar and click on Print Size click Smaller.
If it shows less than 2 pages increase the type size.

Then on Print instructions click print page 2 of 2 page after it comes out of your printer insert that printed page printed side up with the top of the page going first into the printer if your printer loads front the front. If it loads from the back its blank (unprinted) side up facing you with the top of the printed side going down into the chute first. .

Then go back to File and on print instructions click Print page 3 of 3

Thank You Your Help Is Appreciated
If you already know how to do this I apolgize but many people don't this trick .

As a Your Elected Legislator I Pledge

I will... in your own words..No cookie cutter suggestions here... Think about what you want to pledge to your consitiuents and put it here) such as;

*Are you going to be a legislator who's going to introduce legislation just to get your name in the paper ?

Are you going support fund diversions (1) or be a throw money at it even if it doesn't work or its wastefull lawmaker ?

Are going to support mandates (2)with or without funding ?

Will you support a prohibition which is scientifically unproven (3 or even if proven will create unintended consequences ? And lastly will you support legislation your constituents are for when its against your position and conscience? Do you have the guts to tell em ?

*These are pols who spew out resolutions just to get their name on record, then brag on the bills they passed. Or introduce unpassable laws. You can get their records if not from on line, then from your state; House, or Senate, GOP legislative campaign coordinator. Actually when pols do this they waste the state money it costs money to put through oft times more than the state pays em .
FUNDING(1) Take money from roads and give it to schools approve feel good "grants"...
MANDATES.(2)eminent domain,bann,foods,smoking,limit individual freedoms,Bureaucratic compliances
LEMMINGISM (3)global warming,excessive polution safeguards,

REVERSE SIDE

Dear Voter
Think of laws your state and congress passes as pieces of paper, legal sized paper sized 8+ X 14 inches folded once in half widthwise and then folded in half again. Some laws require much more than one sheet and create a bundle of paper.

A thick bundle of paper. Laws that affect your daily life.

Think of the taxes you pay as the rubberband that hold that bundle of papers together. The thicker the bundle the thicker the rubberband and if the bundle becomes too thick ? Conservatives say its time to make the bundle smaller and the rubberband thinner and that will be the direction I will take .

PUT LOGO HERE

------------------------------------------Please cut this out and place inside an area which can be seen thank you your window ------------

BROCHURE PAGE DESIGN

This design uses a 1/3 business fold the top of the page your logo which can include a pix,YOUR NAME and the office your running for,and your campaign slogan. Your logo should fit in that 1/3rd fold (3 1/2 x 8").This can be used as a inside window sign for a car or house

Your printed hand out out should contain the following; Your logo with a slogan, a pix and brief bio of you & your family,
A map, or at least a verbal discription of your district, particularly if your running for a legislative post in a specific district. Too often this is ignored but its a piece of information most voters don't know about which insures your blurb is kept and not tossed away.
Then a brief statement why your running, which also includes your main opponents name if an incumbant.

Mention your opponent by name ? YES ! Particularly if well known, the public knows of that person they should know there's an opponent to that person

GETING PEOPLE PARTICIPATION IN YOUR CAMPAIGN
USE VOTER SURVEYS

>font size=3> The tie between you and the voter are the surveys you take.
. These allow the voter to feel they're participating in getting you elected.
These should consist of a few yes or no , (Y)(N) or (a)(b)answers, A simple one word detailed answer and finally a question which needs a detailed answer. That question should be expressed seeking a view which reduces or eliminates excessive government intervention or regulation

.FOR EXAMPLE
In rural areas. Farmers and those engaged in farming operations
Do you consider yourself (a)Family size farming(______acreage)or(b) commercial- corporate farming(_____acreage)
What percentage of your crop is dedicated to the production of ethanol (___________percentage of acreage dedication)
Costs of fuels and problems occuring from the use of ethanol or bio oils
Do you use bio fuels ? (y)(n) and are fuel additives costs worth their price (y)(n)
Problems in marketing livestock,
How often do you market (fowl) (Hogs) (cattle) (other ________________________)
(1yrly) (2Xyearly) (quarterly) (monthly) what (state) (fed) prohibition or rule would you like to see modified or eliminated ____________________________________

This is a very important aspect of your campaign, draft up a series of questions on issues you would like to know about positions you would like to take
Such as
In rural areas
Do you believe the DNR has been allowed too much authority ? (yes) (no)
Do you know of any funded project that was a boondoggle and benefitted only a few or an individual (yes)(no)
If yes briefly list it___________________________________________________________
In urban areas ..
Do you believe judges are too soft on criminal gangs ?.(yes) (no)
Do you believe public schools have curriculums centered too much on political correctness and individual well being rather than emphasising individual achievement and personal responsiblity in finances and anti social behavior ? (yes) (no)

Questions Federal Legislative Candidates Should Ask

These are questions which will never appear in my opponents questionaire and are supported proposed pending bills.
Should Unions have the right to eliminate the secret ballot when organizing or holding an officer election ? (Yes) (No)

While your stuggling with inflation caused by fuel costs...

This survey could also be included in your front page (handout)(in the trade they are called throw-a-ways or handbills)

The suggested size uses a legal sized sheet 8+X14 (legal sized) with the survey appearing on the bottom of the layout (see sample below) taking up an area of 4 1/4" X 8" (legal sized envelope) printed on card stock 90 or 120lb index and perforated with the reverse side having a return address shown and a box in the upper right hand corner for a stamp.See design below

A cheaper idea but very effective

Since legal sized 8+ X 14" 90 or 120 lb stock is expensive. This questionaire can be printed 3up on 8 X 11 card stock and printed front and back.
Trim size; 3 1/2" X 8" which would be accepted by USPS,(1st class stamp)

(FRONT)

From _______________________________                                                                            .. 1st class stamp

Larger logo with your address

Let me know how you feel about these issues please fill out this survey and send it back to me... Because of limited funds (my opponent has ton$)Please put 1st class stamp on it Thank You

.

(BACK)

YOUR MINATURIZED LOGO HERE

Since my opponent has boasted about the laws (he or she) introduced If you were elected to serve as (name your office) Which (state/fed) law would be the first would you want repealed ?
Congressional candidates here is a perfect way to bring up those poison light bulbs (CFLs) and oil State legislators use the affore mentioned questions on schools and boondoogles

__________________________________________
_____________________________________
_________________________________________

Dont forget to ask for voluteers and of course contributions

.

These are ideal to use in large gatherings or drop offs at a local party headquarters.
Those affore mentioned perforations if your going with an 8+X14" sized card stock can be done by vols by hand using a perf tool which is a small serrated circular blade (ponce wheel) with a handle used by dressmakers (pinking knife or blade ).

On soft polling here's chat sheet suggestions
The caller (vol) introduces themself with the following]
A friendly Greeting I'm so and so calling for; candidates name, who's running for; cite office
Use candidates first name; has asked me to call you to find out how you feel about certain issues ..this will only take a minute and a half of your time (set a time limit to avoid extended conversations)...Is that Ok ?
and then go on with the issues you wish the voter to respond to; Close with On behalf of; repeat candidate's name,(pause) use candidates first name Thanks You... GOD Bless America
Prepare a form so you have a record of their name and the responces and a follow up via mail if budget allows or a reminder phone call during voting time. Or better yet have a volunteer stop by and drop off a Thank You for participating in my survey window sign ..
KEY SIGN LOCATIONS
..It might not be a bad idea for the candidate to go out and make a personal visit to spots where there is high vehicular and foot traffic and do a soft sell.(call back)">EQUIPMENT

SELECTING A PRINTER

Because all jet printers use a water soluble ink and lazer printers don't. If its possible to rent a lazer printer do so, but make certain the ink used in that printer is not water soluble. Using this and the blow up features you can make some decent sized all weather signs by piecing pieces together like they do for billboards thus getting your name out to the voters.
If this proves to be too expensive your printer should have the capability to, scan & post,,blow up to 200%, and fax. There are "water fix" sprays which will coat the item that will allow material (signs etc) to be used for outside .Buy a spray can and test it first to see if the ink runs before you by a case of the stuff because you'll be using a lot of it. Its still not as good as "dry" ink which holds up better.
Besides cases of ink cartridges for your printer,(use black when possible)and double faced adheasive tape. A perfing tool comes in handy which is a serrated circular blade (wheel) used by dressmakers known as a pinking knife comes in handy for tearoff survey replys see article following.

USING A INTERNET/PRINTED PIECE COMBINATION

The following was designed to be printed on one page

Here is a unorthodox concept where conservative candidates pitch for votes in solid blue precincts use both the internet and a printed handout. When used it is bound to generate complaints particularly from the opposition. So if its used please remember the source of complaints. Note the source links to legislative positions which allows this style of piece to be posted on the internet. But it should be printed up with a printed link address to the candidate's website and used as a stand alone handout in key conservative leaning solid blue precincts which can be identified by a low primary
